European original. Playing the Angel is the eleventh studio album by British band Depeche Mode. The album was recorded in several recording studios between January and July 2005 and was released on October 13 of the same year on Mute Records in the UK, and in the US on Sire and Reprise Records. In support of the album, the band went on a concert tour Touring the Angel. In the UK, the album debuted at number 6, and in the US at number 7 on the Billboard 200, remaining sixteen weeks on the chart with 98,000 copies sold in the first week. As of November 2007, the album has sold 418,000 copies in the United States. According to EMI, as of January 2007, the album has sold 1.6 million copies worldwide (except the USA and Canada). By April 2007 in Germany, the album had sold 500,000 copies, becoming double platinum. In the UK, for 190,000 copies, Playing the Angel received gold status. The album also went gold in Canada for 50,000 discs sold there. The total number of official sales was 3,543,000 copies.
