By the time the CD was recorded, the band had been in existence for two years. Some of the songs were not written by "The Beatles", but are cover versions of popular songs at that time. The other part is written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The most successful was the title song "Please Please Me", which was released as a single and became the first song of The Beatles to reach number one in the UK charts. "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Love Me Do" also became popular. In the UK charts, the album was at number one for 30 consecutive weeks from 11 May 1963.
