What's Going On is the eleventh studio album by American musician Marvin Gaye, released on May 21, 1971. The album was a success both commercially and critically acclaimed and, having survived the test of time, became a soul classic of the early 1970s. In the United States, he took the sixth place on the Billboard 200 chart and in December 1993 received a gold disc certificate from the American Recording Industry Association. In various public and professional polls, it has been selected as one of the landmark recordings in the history of popular music and one of the best albums ever released. In 2003, the cd was ranked sixth in the list of the "500 greatest albums of all time" by Rolling Stone magazine, and in 2020, the magazine awarded the album first place.
