European original. Privateering is the seventh solo studio album by British singer, songwriter and guitarist Mark Knopfler, released on September 3, 2012 on Mercury Records. Recorded between March and December 2011. The album reached number one on the album charts in Austria, Germany, Norway and the Netherlands, as well as second or third place in Belgium, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The album reached number eight in the UK. The album was released in North America a year after its European release due to a contract dispute between Knopfler and its North American distributors. Mark Freuder Knopfler is a British singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. He became known as the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits. He embarked on a solo career after the band first broke up in 1988. Dire Straits reunited in 1990, but broke up again in 1995. He is now an independent solo artist.
